Bacteria are often the cause of bad breath

Bad breath or halitosis is most often caused by the presence of bacteria on the teeth and tongue that produce sulphur containing chemicals that cause odours. Otherwise, halitosis can be a sign of other health problems (acid reflux, sinus infections, diabetes, etc)
We recommend you consult with one of our dentists whom, after having examined your mouth, can help you understand the cause of your bad breath.  If there is no oral nor dental reason for the cause of your halitosis, other medical investigation may need to be carried out to find the cause.
If the origin is oral in nature, your dentist can propose a treatment adapted to you, to help resolve the issue of your bad breath within a few weeks.

Why are these bacteria in my mouth?

We all know about the bad breath caused by eating foods like garlic and onions.  This breath may be annoying but is short lived.  When the bad breath is a daily constant, the causes are different:

  • An insufficient or inadequate oral hygiene favours the proliferation of between the teeth and under the gums.  They feed off of remaining bits of food which releases malodorous compounds.
  • We can compare the tongue to a carpet, which can trap food particles and bacteria.
  • An untreated dental infection like a cavity, gingival inflammation, or access, are signs of the presence of battery and can cause bad breath
  • A dry mouth, as in one which lack adequate saliva production, can create halitosis.  Saliva is an essential element in maintaining the balance of your oral health.  It plays the role of a mouth rinse, eliminating, in part, some of the molecules responsible for bad breath.  A lack of saliva is often synonymous with a halitosis problem.  A variety of factors contribute to dry mouth: alcohol consumption, cigarettes and tobacco, mouth breathing as well as certain medications.

How to bed reduce of these bacteria and be rid of bad breath.

Halitosis is not inevitable, and treatments do exist.  Do not hesitate to contact one of our dentists to help determine the cause of your bad breath.  Once the origin is found, they will propose a treatment adapted to help relieve you of your bad breath.

No matter the cause, the objective will be to reduce the presence of bacteria in your mouth.  To succeed, it may require improving your hygiene, treating an infection, or increasing your saliva production. After a few weeks, your bad breath will be a  lost memory!
